M&C STORIES

The story of M&C, the magazine produced by the Molteni Group, is a long one. When it was first distributed at the end of the 1980s, it was called simply Il Giornalone [“Large Newspaper”] – a handful of pages, printed just a few days before the Salone del Mobile was due to open, to inform visitors about the new products on show at the Milan fair and later to be seen in stores all over the world.

There were images, of course, but also sketches, drawings and stories, with pages skilfully designed by Felix Humm, the graphic designer who was in charge of
Molteni&C’s coordinated image. The overall art direction was by Luca Meda, who was a central part of Molteni’s brand and designed many of the company’s products.

Meda and Humm were a winning team, who jostled lightheartedly and skilfully between art and industry, graphics and words. Completing this dream team was Meda’s great friend, the architect and designer Aldo Rossi.
In the 1991 Giornalone, he wrote:

“Sometimes I’m quite happy to write, rather than to draw and design, as if writing were closer to thinking, but then they are one and the same.”

After those glorious years, and a few pauses, in 2006 Il Giornalone was reborn with a new name, M&C, under the direction of Cristiana Colli. It renewed itself once again in 2017 – from being an in-house newsletter focused solely on the business, it became a magazine proper, bringing to life the activities of the Molteni Group within a wider context. In a direct, timely manner it presents the latest news and products on show at the Salone, as well as covering events and meetings, welcoming new guests and tracing the geography of places visited and those that have become home. It is a network of time zones and continents, of skills and passions, of memories and future projects – a landscape, both physical and mental, in which everyone finds their own village and discovers that they are citizens of the world.

Today M&C changes yet again. In this first edition with Studio FM’s new graphic design, the numerous subjects covered include Aldo Rossi and Gio Ponti, a cutting-edge library in Helsinki, Milanese architect and designer Rodolfo Dordoni’s cruise ship projects and an exclusive interview with award-winning photographer Tim Franco.
