Heritage Collection Outdoor

The outdoor proposal coordinated by Vincent Van Duysen is joined by two important projects by Gio Ponti, enriching Molteni&C's Heritage Collection: great classics, expressions of extremely contemporary design ideas that the brand revives.

Thus the iconic D.154.2, already in the indoor catalogue, finds a new identity and use in its outdoor version. The D.150.5 solid wood chaise longue, designed by Gio Ponti for the cruise ship Andrea Doria in 1952, sees the light. A piece of furniture of great craftsmanship, it is evidence of Ponti's design vision. A complex product but meant for industrial production, because “Industry is the way of the 20th century, it is its way of creating” (Gio Ponti, 1925).

“This elegant and refined desk was modern in its profiles and proportions, which are both classic and innovative, in the play of curves and in the invention of an elegantly rounded drawer.”

In collaboration with the Gio Ponti Archives and the heirs of the renowned Milanese architect, Molteni&C is reconstructing one of the rare pieces of furniture Gio Ponti designed for outdoor use: the D.150.5 chaise longue projects for the cruise ship Andrea Doria in 1952.

This edition is a tribute to Ponti's work for the Andrea Doria, where he was able to create exceptional environments with his multifaceted creativity. The chaise longue, "dreamed up" and designed by Ponti, is an important exponent of this representation, which anticipates, by seizing the opportunity of the ship's unconventional environments, precisely the continuous and modifiable spaces of his architecture of later years, where the furnishings participate in the domestic theatre without constructing fixed sets, as could be the case for living room or bedroom furniture, but rather responding to and representing in their design the comforts and needs of those who would use them.

One of Gio Ponti's most iconic and representative pieces, designed in 1954 for the Planchart collectors' villa in Caracas (1953-57), is now available in an outdoor version.

Also in the outdoor version, the characteristic shell-like supportive frame is made of rigid polyurethane, here uncoated but painted in anthracite and ivory.
