ADI Design Index 2011
Set and QallaM, it is hard to imagine two more juxtaposing ideas. The first is a kitchen, designed by Rodolfo Dordoni for Dada. The second is a project which illustrates Molteni’s good quality practices. And yet, both have been chosen for the ADI Design Index, the annual publication of the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (Association for the Industrial Design) which is a collection of the best products in Italian design, chosen by Design ADI’s Permanent Observatory. It is the first step towards participating in the Compasso d’Oro Award, XXIII edition, in 2013. A kitchen and a book have made it into this competition: two very different ideas, yet similar in the desire to experiment down new innovative paths. Set has reintroduced a traditional kitchen ambience, with large range hoods surrounded by cupboards and shelves, natural materials and ‘70’s lacquer, integrating advanced technology into a classic system. Whereas QallaM is a project by Molteni&C, in which the story of the products intertwines with the story of the people and the experiences which have had an influence on the Company’s industrial journey. Thus, shedding light on the company’s experience, the evolution of its products and processes, and defining the future concept of Quality. From a kitchen design to the pursuit of quality, good design knows no boundaries according to ADI, which awards superior design combined with cultural awareness, ethical responsibility for the individual, the society and the environment, and the drive towards new material and immaterial quality. Products, services, studies and research of product development are the categories for the Compasso d’Oro Award, which is the most influential recognition of Italian design, established in 1954 by Gio Ponti. The committee of experts, designers, critics, historians and specialized journalists evaluate and select the most commendable products, to then be published in the annual ADI Design Index.
